The position of a motorcyclist on a Maryland highway is often a precarious one. With cars traveling at high rates of speed, switching lanes with only a moment’s notice, and coming to quick stops in the face of approaching traffic, motorcyclists are presented with their fair share of dangers. However, few things are more dangerous to a motorcyclist than an aggressive driver.
In fact, aggressive driving is one of the leading causes of fatal Maryland motorcycle accidents. Aggressive driving can take many forms, including:
- Speeding;
- Quickly changing lanes;
- Swerving in and out of lanes;
- Failing to signal when making a turn;
- Making illegal turns;
- Failing to yield the right-of-way;
- Making obscene gestures;
- Excessively using the horn; and
- Making verbal threats.
When a driver engages in aggressive driving, they are putting everyone around them at risk, including any motorcyclists that may be on the road. Whether the motorcyclist is the intended target of a driver’s aggression is not important. The reckless behavior aggressive drivers exhibit puts motorcyclists at an especially high risk of getting into a serious or fatal accident.
When a motorcyclist is injured by an aggressive driver, they may be able to seek compensation for their injuries through a Maryland personal injury lawsuit, naming the aggressive driver as a defendant. In these cases, the injured motorcyclist, if successful, may receive compensation for past and future medical expenses, lost wages, and any pain and suffering sustained as a result of the accident.
One Man Dies as a Result of Being Cut Off
A few weeks ago, a 25-year-old man was killed when he was riding his motorcycle in Kendall County, Texas. According to one local news report, the man was riding his motorcycle on the highway when a pick-up truck crossed over into his lane within feet of the front of the motorcycle. The motorcyclist was unable to avoid a collision with the truck, and he was thrown off his bike as a result. Moments after he struck the ground, a second pick-up truck ran the man over, killing him instantly.
Police have begun an investigation into the fatal accident, but they have not yet levied any charges against either of the two drivers involved. It remains to be seen if charges will be filed in the wake of the investigation.
