Maryland Hit-and-Run Bicycle Accidents

No matter which types of vehicles are involved, Maryland hit-and-run accidents can be deadly. However, when a motorist strikes a bicyclist and then leaves the scene without making sure that the cyclist needs medical care, the chance of the accident resulting in serious injuries or death greatly increases.

Of course, leaving the scene of a serious accident is not just shocking to the conscience, but it is also against the law. Under Maryland Transportation Code section 20-102, drivers involved in accidents that result in bodily injury, serious bodily injury, or death are required to remain at the scene of the accident. This is regardless of who was at fault.

Additionally, any driver involved in an accident resulting in any bodily injury must also “render reasonable assistance” to anyone injured in the accident, and they must also provide their name, address, insurance information, and driver’s license. The penalty for failing to comply with these statutes can result in up to a $10,000 fine and 10 years’ imprisonment.

Not only does a hit-and-run driver expose themselves to criminal liability, but they may also be held civilly liable to anyone injured as a result of their failure to stop or remain at the scene. Maryland hit-and-run accident victims should reach out to a dedicated Maryland personal injury attorney to discuss their case and which options may be available to them.

Bicyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run Accident

Earlier this month, one man was killed while he was riding a bicycle home after getting off from work. According to a local news report, at around 7:30 in the evening, the man’s bicycle was found mangled on the side of the road. However, there was no sign of the motorist who had struck him. Emergency responders immediately transported the accident victim to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police have begun an investigation into the fatal hit-and-run accident, and they are scouring the area for surveillance cameras that may have caught the accident on video. Police did find an abandoned car not far from the scene of the accident, but they are not sure whether that vehicle was involved in the fatal collision.
